Summary
Collection contains [Charles Gilbert--home movies] and several commercial short films. The amateur footage is well shot and covers a mix of family events such as vacations, holiday rituals, and sporting activities. Portions of the Collection contain footage of circus parades and shows from 1929; a golf tournament; University of Maine football games at Orono in 1929; footage of the Wyman Dam under construction across the Kennebec River at Bingham, Maine, in 1929; a detailed record of a trip around the world in 1928; an aerial show in 1929; and winter logging with horses. The 9.5 mm. films in the Collection are Empire commercial shorts including animation and short features such as Charlie Chapin films. Collection also contains 400 35 mm. slides which correspond to the travel footage.
Biographical/Historical Notes
Charles Gilbert graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1894. He worked as an engineer for Great Northern Paper until his retirement in 1924. Mr. Gilbert lived in Bangor, owned a home in Castine, and took several trips around the world.
